Chubby Checker Wants to Twist Again ... As a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer; Rock Legends Jump to Chubby Checker's Defense, Tells Cleveland Don't Wait `Until It's Too Late'

Chubby Checker holds the honor of recording the number one hit song in America over the last 50 years: The Twist. Chubby Checker wants to twist again, like he does every summer. The Twist is the only single to top the Billboard Hot 100 twice.

Checker is more than just a Philly music legend. He is a hit making rock and roll pioneer. Chubby's early 60s hits "The Twist" and "Let's Twist Again" are two of the most popular songs in Rock and Roll history. The Twisting singer is one of the few artists ever to reach number one twice with the same song.

Checker wants to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while he's still performing. He said "I don't want to get in there when I'm 85 years old. I'll tell them to drop dead, so you better do it quick while I'm still smiling."

Chubby Checker wants Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to induct him soon. If they don't, he says, they can "drop dead."

Speaking from the red carpet for the annual Songwriters Hall of Fame gala in New York Checker said "'Let's Twist Again' was the first rock 'n' roll song that received a Grammy (in 1962)."

The Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony saw Ray Davies of the Kinks and Donovan inducted.

Checker says his place in the Cleveland, Ohio-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can sustain his career.

"If you put me in when I'm too old to make a living, then it's no good for me to be in there," he said. "The Rolling Stones, they're in there. The Beastie Boys are in there, they're young. Hall and Oates were just in there and they're still making money."

Checker performed "Let's Twist Again" for the ASCAP Centennial celebration at the annual Songwriters Hall of Fame gala.

Daryl Hall, another rock and roll legend from Philly, who was inducted this year with John Oates, asked about Checker during his speech, saying "why isn't he in?"

Songwriter Kenny Gamble of the songwriting team Gamble and Huff added "I think Chubby Checker should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He's the only person I know to have the same song go to No. 1 twice."
