"The thing about Jesse we knew in Spring Training -- he doesn't scare off, he's a guy that doesn't back down," said Padres manager Bud Black. "It was good to see him make some pitches, throw the breaking ball for a called strike and come through in a way where we needed it."

Erasmo Ramirez (1-4, 5.27 ERA) is struggling this season, yet he hasn't allowed a run in consecutive starts -- though those outings lasted just a combined 9 2/3 innings with nine walks against the Rays and Rangers.

"Ramirez seems to be turning the corner a little bit," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon, who took the youngster out with a 1-0 lead after five frames in his last start against Texas. "Our idea was to get him out of there on a good note and let him build off that."
