The Success of EXO: What Soon To Debut Groups Can Learn From Them

EXO's Grand Prize win at the 28th Golden Disk Awards served as a testimony to the meteoric success of group, who has catapulted into the becoming one of the leading K-Pop acts in a very short period of time. While EXO resembles the structure of label mates Super Junior, there are distinct qualities that have aided the group in clearly distinguishing themselves from their competitors. While many groups, including those who have debuted in 2014 such as Got7 market themselves through relatively traditional concepts, EXO along with the equally intriguing B.A.P were introduced to K-Pop fans though the creation of their own mythology. The sense of otherworldliness with which EXO was initially presented to their fans has aided in establishing their identities as bonafide K-Pop stars.

With their recent string of awards, it is difficult to believe that EXO officially debuted in April 2012. Their debut single Mama was attention grabbing for the packed K-Pop market in that the musicality of the song was a fusion of numerous genres. Mama incorporated elements of classic rock, orchestral influences, pop, and hip hop. The approach of genre bending allowed for the creative influences of the members to be highlighted, while the mythology of EXO Planet was chronicled in the music video. The Mama EP was so eclectic in itself that it acted as a aural showcase for what audiences could expect in the future.

While many rookie groups appear to be unpolished or in need of refinement, EXO was performance ready from the time of their debut. Whereas the concept for Mama was edgy, their 2013 release XOXO was reflective of youthful innocence from the release of initial teaser photos. The school concept served as a reminder to both audiences and critics that the group was still in its initial inception and that they should be treated kindly. While it is entertaining to see rookie groups debut with bravado and swagger, it is often better to see humility.

Although, the members of EXO perform well on variety shows, they have just recently began to enter into the market as acting idols. EXO Showtime has served as an appropriate outlet for both established fans and those who are new to the group to learn more about EXO. However, the reality show has come as the group has overcome the initial obstacles of debuting. In this, EXO may be new to some K-Pop audiences but appear to these audiences as polished professionals.

As more rookie groups and trainees are rolled out in 2014, there are many factors that should be considered. Although the act may be new to audiences, the performers themselves have gone through grueling training and sacrifice in order to obtain a coveted spot on stage. Rather than cranking out acts, it is beneficial for the example of EXO to be followed. If a group debuts with a unique concept and when they are best prepared, not only will they succeed, but they will obtain permanence in the fleeting world of K-Pop.
