U.P.S. Plane Crashes in Alabama, Killing Two: Both Pilots Aboard Die In Early-Morning Cargo Flight Crash; Officials Investigating

A United Parcel Service cargo plane has crashed, killing two. The U.P.S. plane crashed during its landing approach at the Birmingham, Ala., airport on Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Both pilots are dead from the incident. The UPS plane crashed at about 6 a.m. The plane was coming from Louisville and crashed as it descended towards  Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

Few details have been released about the U.P.S. Flight 1354 crash.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman, Kathleen Bergen, said that the plane went down about half a mile from the runway.

The remains of the UPS plane, an Airbus A300, are being investigated by officials.

Toni Bast, who is spokeswoman for Birmingham's airport authority, told press the plane crashed in an area outside the perimeter of the airport. She said that as a result, normal airport operations were not affected.

U.P.S. said they are still gathering information about the fiery plane crash.

"This incident is very unfortunate, and our thoughts and prayers are with those involved," Mitch Nichols, the company's president, wrote in a statement.
