Jane Fonda Vietnam: 'The Butler' Banned From Kentucky Theatre Due To Anti War Comments And Nancy Reagan Portrayal; Veterans Boycott

Jane Fonda was a staunch supporter of anti-Vietnam war demonstrations, and Jane made many statements against the Vietnam war. Now, a theater owner in Kentucky refuses to show "The Butler," the movie in which she portrays first lady Nancy Reagan. Veteran groups have also boycotted the film.

The dispute stems from director Lee Daniels' decision to cast ultra-liberal Jane Fonda to play former first lady Nancy Reagan in "The Butler," IB Times reports. Reagan is known as a conservative icon in American politics.

According to Fox News, Ike Boutwell, who owns MoviePalace and Showtime Cinemas in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, told The News-Enterprise that Fonda's statements and demonstrations against the Vietnam War caused him to view her as a traitor, and he won't show any movie in which she stars in his theaters.

Boutwell is a Korean War veteran who trained pilots during the Vietnam War, Fox News reports.

Veteran groups have also joined in, and have boycotted Jane Fonda's movie. Larry Reyes is a Navy veteran who founded the popular Facebook page: "Boycott Hanoi Jane Playing Nancy Reagan." According to IB Times, he views the casting choice of Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan to be disrespectful and ill-intentioned.

"Growing up in a military family, I heard my father and uncles talk about what Jane did, so from an early age I knew about her history with the war and how upset veterans were about it. ... When I heard she was going to play such a well-liked and highly respected president's wife, it got to me," he said in an interview, according to Fox News, IB Times reports.

"They [the filmmakers] knew by picking Jane for the part they were going to stir up some stuff. I'm not a conservative or a liberal, I'm an American. And that was a slap in the face," Reyes added.

"The Butler" is about Cecil Gains, a black man who served in the White House under eight presidents.

Fonda's response to opposition to her movie, which debuted last weekend in the top spot?

"Get a life," Fonda said, in a statement to Hollywood Reporter in April.
