Cowher's former wife, Kaye Cowher, died of skin cancer at age 54 on July 23, 2010. She was a North Carolina State University graduate, who played professional basketball. The two had three daughters together. Two of their daughters played basketball at Princeton University. Meagan Cowher is married to NHL forward Kevin Westgarth of the Carolina Hurricanes . Lindsay is engaged to NBA forward Ryan Kelly of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Cowher was the head coach of the Steelers from 1992 to 2006. He finished his coaching career with a 140-90-1 regular-season record. In the playoffs, he was 12-9. Overall, a 161-99-1 record. He won two AFC Championships, with one of those cumulating with a Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks. He retired as a champion and entered the broadcast table with CBS, which he can be seen previewing and recapping games with others legends.
