'Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Spoilers: Is Damon 'Selfish' Or Loves Elena 'With Reckless Abandon'? Ian Somerhalder Explains Their Relationship [VIDEO]

"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 premieres in less than a week, and now Ian Somerhalder is dishing some new spoilers about Damon and his relationship with Elena.

In a recent interview with CW69, Ian Somerhalder spilled some spoilers while explaining his character, Damon Salvatore, in season 5 of "The Vampire Diaries" and how Damon will act now that he's finally got the girl, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), Wetpaint reports.

Much of the storyline of "The Vampire Diaries" season 5 will focus on the relationship between Damon and Elena, as we have previously reported.

But Ian Somerhalder admits that we will still get to see the same old Damon in season 5, who Ian describes as a character who "loves with reckless abandon" and "fierce loyalty."

Ian continued: "He'll screw you over in a heartbeat if he needs to, but it will be for someone he loves."

What does that mean for Elena? Spoiler alert!

"[His actions] could be deemed as selfish," Ian hinted, "but he wants the best for [Elena] and he's a lot older than her, so he thinks he knows everything ... What he needs to do is just let her grow, and make her own decisions, make her own mistakes, make her own triumphs."

Damon and Elena's relationship sounds uncannily similar to the previous relationship between the co-stars, Ian and Nina. Ian is much older than Nina, and they recently broke up after dating for three years. Could it be that Ian "thought he knew everything," but now realizes he should have let Nina "grow, and make her own decisions"?

We may never know. But we do know that Nina might be moving on, amid rumors that she is dating Derek Hough now.
