Mumbai Municipal Building Collapses: 5-11 Dead, Up To 26 Injured While 30-Plus Are Trapped Under Debris

Mumbai municipal building collapses killing at least five and injuring 21 other people Friday.

The residential building housing the workers of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai was undergoing repairs when it came down at about 6 a.m. local time, according to Business Week. The Mumbai collapse could have maybe no death, according to authorities who said in April that they had asked residents to vacate the building.

About 21 families were living in the 33-year-old building, the Hindustan Times reported on its website. A 10-year-old boy was among the survivors, while others weren't so lucky during the Mumbai municipal building collapse.

One of those lucky ones was Suyash Jhadav. Jhadav lived to the building next to the one that collapse. With fear that the building Jhadav lived in, he got out of there.

"I was woken up by the loud noises after the collapse," Jhadhav said, a resident of a neighboring building. "I felt that something might happen to our building since both buildings are close. It took a while for me to overcome my fear because the noises were frightening."

Another report by mid-day.com, "The death toll in the collapse has risen to 11," a civic official said, adding many more were believed to be trapped under the debris.

Of the 11 considered dead in the report, three of a family were killed by the collapse.

Rescuers are working on getting over 30 people that are trapped under the debris.
