As commercials ran for the new Tom Hanks Somali Pirate movie on TV, web pirates collected ill-gotten-booty, to steal a phrase from M*A*S*H, swooping down on the series finale of AMC’s “Breaking Bad.” Across the globe, web users worldwide downloaded over 500,000 copies of the Breaking Bad episode “Felina” within 12 hours of the first illegal copy showing up.

According to TorrentFreak, the piracy news site, that means “Felina,” the series finale, broke records for the most pirated episode of “Breaking Bad” on, yeah, record. And the number one record running through everyone’s head? “El Paso” by Marty Robbins. I’ve been playing it all day.

The illegal Breaking Bad downloads happened in countries where the show wasn’t available legally. TorrentFreak’s analysis of nearly 14,000 users found that about 18% of the “Breaking Bad” episodes pirates were in Australia, 14.5% in the United States and 9.3% in Britain. In the U.K., final eight episodes of Breaking Bad have been available on Netflix the day after it was broadcast in the U.S.

Yeah, that’s not fair and I don’t blame them. I know I couldn’t wait.

According to TorrentFreak, more than 85,000 people worldwide were sharing a single copy of the final episode through the BitTorrent tracker at peak pirate period “Breaking Bad.”It didn’t beat HBO’s “Game of Thrones” though. Which holds the record for the largest BitTorrent swarm ever recorded. Over 170,000 people shared a single copy at once.
