Zack Wheeler (1-5, 4.63 ERA) will be on the mound for New York, trying to turn around what has been a struggle for the most part this season. The right-hander threw 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball against Arizona on Saturday, his longest outing since last September. Wheeler's efforts to improve his command generally and 4.3 walks-per-nine-innings rate specifically are ongoing, according to MLB.com.
"That's a huge step forward for him. Enormous step," Mets manager Terry Collins said following Wheeler's latest start. "He was angry with the way things started, but he beared down, and he pitched very, very well throughout the entire ballgame."
David Buchanan (1-0, 3.60 ERA) will be on the mound for his second MLB start. Buchanan impressed in his big league debut Saturday against the Dodgers. He allowed five hits, two runs and struck out two in five innings at Citizens Bank Park, keeping his composure as Cliff Lee's replacement, according to MLB.com.
"That's an outing he can build on as we need him," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said after Buchanan's debut.
After losing their first game, the Mets bounced back and won the next two, taking the series against the Pirates. The Phillies have won and lost their last six in that order.
