R.A. Dickey (5-4, 3.94 ERA) will be on the mound after a start where he was two outs of recording his first complete game of the season during his last outing vs Oakland. He's tossed seven consecutive quality starts and has an ERA under 4.00 for the first time since becoming a Blue Jay after winning a Cy-Young award with the Mets.

Kansas City will throw out its best pitcher in James Shields (6-3, 2.95 ERA). Shields took a no-decision in his last start, a six-inning effort vs. the Angels. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits, including two home runs, and struck out four while walking two, according to MLB.com.

One reason the Royals are struggling going into this four-game series vs one of the top teams in the American League is because Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler are a combined 3 for 29 during the skid with one RBI.

"We've got a team that is underperforming offensively," manager Ned Yost told ESPN.com. "When they start to perform to their level is when we are going to start producing wins and getting on a bit of a run. You got to fight through it, and stay calm."

Second baseman Omar Infante recently came off the disabled list after dealing with back irritation, and outfielder Lorenzo Cain has battled nagging hamstring issues, so Yost will have to get creative with his lineups during Kansas City's four-game series with the Blue Jays, which starts Thursday, according to MLB.com.

"I have to be careful with Omar and Lorenzo," Yost said. "My plan is to play Omar at least two of the four games. That turf is tough."
