Iggy Azalea New Record Scores Top Two Slots on Billboard Top 100, But Did She Match The Beatles Record?

Iggy Azalea scored both the Number One and Number Two spots in the Billboard Hot 100. The media immediately jumped to proclaim that Iggy Azalea matched the record set by the Beatles in 1964, and further say that The Beatles records only got to the top because of their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, but Azalea didn't make it to the top on her own. Iggy had help.

The criteria for the singles charts has changed since 1964.  Billboard now says 64 streams has the same value to one download sale. The music video for Iggy Azalea's 'Fancy' pulled in 63,750,656 YouTube views. The new Billboard rules say that equals 996,104 sales.  The Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964 reached a record TV viewing audience of about 74 million people. The Beatles performed 'All My Loving', 'Till There Was You', 'She Loves You', 'I Saw Her Standing There' and 'I Want To Hold You Hand." All four records benefitted from the appearance.

Iggy Azalea's new single "Fancy" features British pop singer Charli XCX. The song currently sits at Number One in the U.S. singles charts. Iggy Azalea is a guest singer on the Number Two single. Ariana Grande's new song "Problem" features a guest appearance from Iggy Azalea. The Beatles set the record on February 22, 1964, when "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" moved from the third spot to the toppermost of the poppermost and the second toppermost, respectively.

Billboard took to Twitter to proclaim: "@IggyAzalea joins @TheBeatles as the only artists to rank Nos. 1 & 2 simultaneously with their first 2 #Hot100 hits: https://blbrd.co/TUbRRL"

The Australian singer took to twitter to say "Well I'm very pleased, last year seemed impossible to convince anyone in the music business I could break into the top 100. Haha."

Pharrell Williams hit the top two spots last year, when he was featured on both Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky."  Azalea is only the third female artist to reach the heights since Mariah Carey shattered recods with "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" in 2005 and Ashanti hit the top two slots with "Foolish" and Fat Joe's "What's Luv?" in 2002).

Iggy Azalea is the fourth Australian music act to hit number one on the U.S. billboard charts. The first Australian act to hit the top was The Bee Gees with their song "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart."

Iggy first told her twitter followers "@charli_xcx: Fancy is number 1. #DEAD" < ayeeeeeeeeeee
