Dave Couier Says Alanis Morissette `You Oughta Know’ Was Not About Him; No Matter What Uncle Joe Might Have Said

Alanis Morissette's breakup anthem "You Oughta Know" is a raw, angry and sexy revenge song. It broke the Canadian singer onto the charts and released a controversy over the mystery jerk at the center.

Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" scratched at the back of a mystery man who left Alanis alone and pregnant. The songs sparked speculation that hadn't been seen since Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." For years people wondered whether the song was about Mick Jagger, who sang harmonies and might have thought the song was about him, until it came out that it was about Warren Beatty.

Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joe from the TV series "Full House" admitted that he was the culprit when he was cornered at the time. Coulier and Morissette dated in 1992, three years before Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" album, which had "You Oughta Know" as its lead single. But he was just saying that because he was fed up being asked.

Dave Coulier now says that Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" isn't about him.

Coulier recently took to Buzzfeed to clear the rumors "First of all, the guy in that song is a real a-hole, so I don't want to be that guy. Secondly, I asked Alanis and she said 'Well, you know, it could be a bunch of people.'"

Coulier said to BuzzFeed during an interview "I dated Alanis in 1992. You know, it's just funny to be the supposed subject of that song. First of all, the guy in that song is a real a-hole, so I don't want to be that guy. Secondly, I asked Alanis, 'I'm getting calls by the media and they want to know who this guy is."

So one time, I was doing a red carpet somewhere and [the press] just wore me down and everybody wanted to know so I said, 'Yeah, all right, I'm the guy. There I said it.' So then it became a snowball effect of, "OH! So you are the guy!" It's just become this silly urban legend that I just have to laugh at."

Coulier understands why people think he inspired Alanis Morissette's breakup anthem "You Oughta Know," saying "You know, it's just funny to be the supposed subject of that song," he said. "First of all, the guy in that song is a real a-hole, so I don't want to be that guy."

You Oughta Know Lyrics:

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
 An older version of me
 Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
 Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother
'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
 But you're still alive
And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
 You, you, you oughta know
You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her?
'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, til you died
 But you're still alive
And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
 You, you, you oughta know
'cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
 And I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it...well can you feel it
Well, I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
 You, you, you oughta know
