It looks like a Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fight is no longer happening as both fighters won't come to terms and have no chance to meet at catch weight.
In recent months, the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fight will battle Gennady Golovkin. Should Cotto win, there wouldn't be any problem at all. But in Alvarez' case, Golden Boy promotions won't agree to fight Golovkin as they believe it is too early or perhaps, both fighters can meet at a specific weight.
A few weeks ago, Alvarez was asked what should be done in order for him and Golovkin to face-off in a boxing ring. The Mexican said, " "If he [Golovkin] wants to fight with me, let him come down to 155 and I'll fight him whatever day he wants...At this moment, my body isn't ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I'll be ready for 160," Canelo said.
Upon hearing Alvarez' response, Golovkin immediately said that there is no chance he will go down to that weight unless the one he is fighting is undefeated American boxer - now retired Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"There is no chance that I will go to 155-pounds for a 'Canelo' fight. The division limit is 160 pounds, this is my weight class," Golovkin said to ESPN Deportes via Opening Round. "I am a fighter; I am here not for business."
"I fight at middleweight or super middleweight. So, no chance I go to 156 or 158, that's just business. I think I would go to 154 just for a fight with Floyd Mayweather. He is number one in the world."
With Canelo out of the picture, who would be the next best candidate for Gennady Golovkin next fight? Stay tuned.
