"Gravity Falls" season 3 won't have a release date.
It's because the studio executives have decided to pull the plug on the Disney XD series after only its second season, reported Variety.
The announcement was made by the show's creator and executive producer Alex Hirsch in recent Tumblr post.
"The first thing to know is that the show isn't being cancelled - it's being finished," Hirsch wrote in his post. "This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago."
He explained that he had envisioned "Gravity Falls" to close on a specific timetable. The series included 40 half-hour episodes and 17 shorts.
"I always designed 'Gravity Falls' to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end," Hirsch said,
"There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff," he added, as he shed light on Disney's move to do away with a release date for "Gravity Falls" season 3.
"Gravity Falls" follows the adventures of 12-year-old twin brother and sister Mabel and Dipper Pines, who spend the summer in a small Oregon town with their great-uncle Stan who runs a roadside attraction called the Mystery Shack.
Things start to unravel at Gravity Falls, when the twins uncover secrets involving their "Grunkle Stan" and other strange characters in the town that seem to bend the rules of space and time.
In the meantime, many fans were disappointed with Disney's announcement that "Gravity Falls" season 3 will no longer have a release date with Disney's decision to end the show, according to Forbes.
"Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever," said his Hirsch in his Tumblr post.
"It's meant to be an exploration of the experience of summer, and in a larger sense a story about childhood itself," he added. "The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious-and why you should cherish it while it lasts."
"Gravity Falls" season 3 may not see the light of day, but fans of the series continue to hope that Disney will have a change of heart.
