PS2 backwards compatibility gives gamers more options.
Gaming consoles are upgraded every few years with a more updated model that runs smoother and has more features to make the gaming experience much better. While getting the latest model gives you the chance to play the newly developed games, the old favorites won't be playable in the latest model with an upgraded system.
However, Sony gave Playstation 4 users something to rejoice about as they've introduced the PS2 backwards compatibility to the PS4 console without announcing that they did it.
Eurogamer reported that when the games are launched, players get informed by a system prompt saying that the games controls are mapped very differently to the DualShock 4 gamepad. Nostalgia sets in when the Playstation 2 logo appears when a game is booted and the graphics were given a resolution boost to 1292 x 896. This is a major upgrade as compared to the original 512 x 448 and 640 x 448 resolutions.
This would mean that with the PS2 backwards compatibility, the Playstation 4 may possibley get additional 1,850 PS2 game titles added into the PS4's game library. For those who are unable to fathom how many games that would be, it would quadruple the library size overnight, as reported by Tech Radar.
There are no further details disclosed by Sony as they did not explicitly announce that the PS4 was capable of running PS2 games and any information on the PS2 emulator is being kept heavily under wraps. Perhaps more announcements will be made in the future concerning the future plans for PS2 content making a comeback on the current gaming consoles.
