Now that the Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez super fight has come to its conclusion, one camp is rejoicing while the other is wondering where to go after the setback.
Such is the case for Miguel Cotto and his trainer, Freddie Roach. The Puerto Rican boxer was defeated via unanimous decision by his Mexican rival. Some say it was lopsided, but in the eyes of Freddie Roach, they should have won that fight.
"I thought my guy fought a good fight," Roach said via Opening Round. "We had a gameplan to outbox him and I thought we did that. His [Cotto] defence was impeccable and he threw lots of good combination."
I don't know what those scores were about. It was a good, close fight, a competitive fight and it was good for boxing," Roach referring to the officiating of the fight. "I thought we had the edge at the end but it went the other way. I thought Miguel was using the jab very well but I thought he should have backed him up a little bit more. We might have had more success than that. But I still think we outscored him."
He added that although Alvarez was the aggressor, Cotto threw way more punches that connected which should have been converted to a score.
"He [Canelo] was the bigger guy and he was coming forward but coming forward doesn't mean you win the fight. He threw a lot of shots and landed some but we landed a lot. I'm not a judge, but I thought he [Cotto] won."
With that said, it is currently unknown what Cotto's next move is, but with $15 million on hand, he has the option to hang up the gloves and wait for his name to be inducted in the Hall of Fame.
