Sony Talks About How PS4 Backwards Compatibility Would Work For PS2 Games

Just like what Microsoft has planned for the Xbox One, Sony also announced that the PS4 has a backwards compatibility that would allow PS2 games to be played on the latest gaming console.

In an article posted by the Vine Report, the PlayStation 4 would allow PS2 games to be played with Sony working on "emulation mechanics."

A confirmation reported by Wired had a representative from Sony confirm the PS4 backwards compatibility.

"We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation," a representative reportedly said. "We have nothing further to comment at this point in time."

According to the same source, Sony may have already discreetly hinted the backwards compatibility by having a package of other "Star Wars" games such as "Super Star Wars," "Star Wars: Racer Revenge," "Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter," and "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter" packaged with the "Star Wars: Battlefront" PS4 bundle.

The Sixth Axis, meanwhile revealed how the emulation would work for the PS4 backwards compatibility in their website.
While running on a more advanced graphics processing unit, the games would have a different feel and a more improved look.

"With a noticeably improved resolution and the games running at 60fps, the PS4's emulation process looks to eliminate some of that visual awkwardness when revisiting older games," the site revealed. "Another boon would be the implementation of trophy support."

Although the backwards compatibility for PS4 works on downloaded or installed games for now, the site also pointed out the possibility of having discs working on the newest console as well, which is seen on the Xbox One.

"Implementation is also another huge consideration," the site continued. "If, by some miracle, the PlayStation 4 allowed players to redeem free emulated copies of titles by inserting their old discs into the system, for many that would be game, set, and match. That's exactly what's happening with Microsoft and the Xbox One with more and more games from the 360's software library requiring nothing more than an old disc to cement that backwards compatibility process, albeit it from a pre-approved list that comes from working in collaboration with publishers."

With the PS4 backwards compatibility revealed, more games are expected to be introduced in the months to come.
