The struggle is real. Last year's Western Conference Finals runner-ups, the Houston Rockets remains in a slump despite firing Kevin McHale as their head coach.
For sure, fingers will be pointed and that seemed to be the case for McHale. But after being replaced by assistant head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, nothing much has changed for the Rockets. Could it be the lack of leadership from James Harden? Apparently so.
Here's a report from CBS Sports detailing what transpired in the player only meeting held by the Rockets.
"While players tried to keep details of the meeting private, two themes emerged, three people told USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation. Harden's play and aloofness have frustrated teammates, and McHale took the brunt of the blame for the team's play. Practices were not resulting in improved play in games."
Harden's performance so far gives a bit of credibility to the allegations. Although he is putting up his usual numbers, his leniency on defense is back once again according to Matt Moore from CBS Sports.
Some might associate Harden's current slump might be due to the busy off-season he had, signing a $200 million contract with Adidas plus being in a relationship with Khloe Kardashian. Nevertheless, GM Daryl Morey believes this is temporary and has nothing to do with their franchise star's personal life.
"We know James Harden's a great player. James hasn't played up to his standards," Morey said via Real GM. "I can't point to it. I know he'll turn it around."
"One reason people love playing for the Rockets is we worry about what's on the floor," Daryl Morey said. "I don't talk to him about his personal life. (But) I don't think that's a factor at all."
