PLayers must create their own fortress, build their own community, train troops and attack other fortresses in order to earn gold and elixir. These spoils of war can be used in order to upgrade the fortress or the troops for better defense and offense. While the game is more fun played as a multiplayer game, there is an option for those who would like to play a pseudo-single player campaign. Instead of attacking other players' fortresses, a series of fortified goblin villages must be destroyed.
