While streaming numbers may be more important for anime developers, it would definitely seem that Toei Animation can call this week a win for its third reboot/sequel of a classic anime series.
It would appear that nostalgia shall reign supreme again for one more year.
According to reports, the "Digimon Adventure Tri" part one "Reunion" theatrical release earned 59 million yen (about $480,000) in the first two days within opening on Nov. 21 in Japan. The number appears small at first glance, but is impressive given that the release was limited to 10 theaters.
As a result of the successful premiere, Japanese voice cast members appeared at the Sapporo Cinema Frontier "Digimon Adventure Tri" release on Nov. 28.
So far, fans in an ANN forum are responding to the news about "Digimon Adventure Tri's" Japane box office performance with hopes for a theatrical release in the U.S.
"If they brought it to several US theaters, I think there's enough Digimon fans that could help make it earn a few million here. Of course, if they could dub it using the original English voices, that would make a lot of fans even happier," said Kadmos1.
Unfortunately, "Digimon Adventure Tri" has yet to receive an officia licensing outside of streaming in the U.S., making the anime unlikely to gain a theatrical release elsewhere. But then again, a brand new "Digimon Adventure Tri" English dub could be an effective method to draw U.S. fans of the original "Digimon Adventure" anime series to the theaters.
Nevertheless, for those fans outside of Japan eager to watch "Digimon Adventure Tri," Crunchyroll is streaming the series in the United States, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America. The company also states that further episodes of "Digimon Adventure Tri" will be scheduled some time in winter 2016.
Meanwhile, "Digimon Adventure Tri" part two "Determination" will premiere in Japan on March 12.
