Will a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel ever see the light of day?
The answer is an emphatic yes, according to Skydance Media Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberg, reported The Wrap.
"Do we intend to have a next step of Terminator? Yes, we do," Goldberg disclosed at TheWrap's 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference.
The only question, however, is the timing of the film's release which has been a major concern among studio officials who initially decided to shelve the sequel after "Terminator: Genisys fared poorly at the US box office.
"I wouldn't say on hold, so much as re-adjusting," she said.
The lady executive also wasn't clear how Skydance's re-calibrated approach would affect the production of the "Terminator: Genisys" sequel which has been given a May 2017 release.
"We are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year," she said.
Goldberg explained that the company takes its movies' domestic earnings seriously, but in today's globalized market, this isn't no longer the main gauge of a film's success.
"In terms of 'Terminator,' the worldwide market paid attention, but we're not taking the domestic number lightly," she pointed out.
In the meantime, the chances of having a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel received another boost after it has been confirmed that James Cameron will regain the rights to the iconic franchise come 2019, reported Movie Pilot.
The 61-year-old director has been credited as the brains behind the original "Terminator" films, having written and directed "Terminator 1" and "Terminator 2."
Cameron however made a major misstep when he sold the rights to the film in 1984, a decision which he has regretted up to this day.
His interest in his long-lost brainchild was only renewed when he saw "Terminator: Genisys."
"'[Terminator: Genisys],' which I think of as the third film, is a riff against expectation," Cameron said. "It's being very respectful of the first two films."
" I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated, like this is a renaissance," he added.
Although there is still no official confirmation yet on the release date of the "Terminator: Genisys" sequel, the film's followers can nevertheless look forward to seeing the time-travelling cyborgs wreaking havoc once again on the big screen.
