Will a "Pacific Rim 2" movie ever see the light of day?
If Guillermo del Torro had his way, he would like the follow up to his giant robots vs monsters film to become a reality, going by a tweet he made last October, according to Cinema Blend.
"PACIFIC RIM 2: Budget and script went in. No answers yet," the Mexican director tweeted. "If anything happens, I will post. If nothing happens, I will just keep rambling."
But it seems that studio executives will need a lot more convincing before they finally decide to greenlight the project which has been put on hold indefinitely.
The first "Pacific Rim" film earned $411 million versus its $190 million budget, which was actually good enough for a feature film of its genre.
But industry observers noted that the figure still didn't quite measure up to the "Avengers" franchise which has hauled in $1 billion worldwide.
"Pacific Rim 2" was actually in the pre-production phase when it ran into unspecified problems sometime in September.
The sequel would reportedly see the return of its original cast members who include Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman.
The jaeger/kaiju film's story would focus on a world where humanity no longer feared the presence of monsters, having been able to adapt to the constant threat emanating from beneath the ocean.
Based on previous reports, the release date of "Pacific Rim 2" would not be later than Aug. 4, 2017.
In the meantime, Guillermo del Torro has assured fans that there will be a "Pacific Rim 2" despite the setbacks that the film has faced, according to Cross Map.
The 61-year-old director also revealed that he also wanted to do an animated series of "Pacific Rim" together with a comic book that would tie up to the movie.
The comic book, which it titled "Pacific Rim: Tales From The Drift," started development after the release of the original film.
Fans will just have to wait for a while, as Warner Bros. decides on the fate of "Pacific Rim 2."
