Despite having the worst record in the league, the Philadelphia 76ers have re-signed head coach Brett Brown to a 2-year extension.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Brown has had to deal with an ever-changing roster which has led to a dismal 38-149 record. The decision to hire Brown was reportedly prior to the hiring of US Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo.
As per usatoday.com, team owner Josh Harris said the hiring of Colangelo was made to help their losing situation. "This season has not been easy for us and even more difficult than we anticipated," Harris said. "Our situation needed a review to make our situation better."
Experts believe this could be the team's first step in moving away from Sam Hinkie's highly-criticized rebuilding plan. Based on a report by philly.com, Colangelo's hiring will eventually grab all of Hinkie's power and decision-making capabilities.
"I can't see him surviving this," a league executive said about Hinkie's job secutiry. "All I know is Colangelo is going to do it his way. If he doesn't agree with what they are doing, he's going to do it his way. That's the only reason he came in."
In addition to this, Hinkie has been known as having poor relationships with players' agents. Thus, the team has had difficulty in signing key players in free agency and setting up meetings or workouts with draft prospects.
Rumors have surfaced that Brown has demanded that the team should start aiming to win now after years of rebuilding and trading players for assets. One of those rumored targets for the head coach is Rajon Rondo. Experts believe that the rebuilding 76ers could look into tapping resurgent All-Star Rajon Rondo during the offseason. Brown has been known for his fast paced offense which would be perfect for Rondo's preferred tempo. As the 76ers' roster is filled with relatively unknown players, Rondo's All-Star status could help revive a struggling team filled with young prospects in need of guidance.
