‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Trailer Evokes Nostalgia, Puts Pressure On Film’s Stars

The first teaser trailer for "Independence Day: Resurgence" has been released, evoking a sense of nostalgia among viewers of the original film.

The sequel to the 90s blockbuster sci-fi movie which made Will Smith a household name, was helmed by comebacking director Roland Emmerich, reported Collider.

"Resurgence is an 'Independence Day' for today's audience," noted Collider, describing the film as "cinematographically darker and looks a bit self-serious."

The site noted that the movie is a "combination of nostalgia and modernity" but tries to make a distinction though "its cinematographically darker and looks a bit self-serious."

"I can't help but get a bit of the old butterflies in my stomach over it," wrote Collider's Haleigh Foutch. "'Independence Day' is one of my all-time favorite 90s action flicks."

A synopsis of the iconic humans vs. aliens film says that "After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale."

"Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet," the synopsis added.

The highly-anticipated sequel however may not have the same kind of humor which made the first film a fan favorite.

Moreover, Will Smith, who played the role of a fighter jet pilot in the original film, is no longer appearing in the follow up movie.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward.

In the meantime, the speech which plays over the "Independence Day: Resurgence" trailer "raises the stakes to the stars," and "carries less hope, more doom," according to The Guardian.

"We're fighting for our right to live, to exist," Bill Pullman, who portrays the role of United States president, says in his speech in the original film. "And should we win the day, the fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: 'We will not go quietly into the night!"

"We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on. We're going to survive. Today we celebrate ... our Independence Day!," Pullman said, as he concluded his steering speech.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" will premiere on June 24, 2016
