As the Minnesota Timberwolves fight for a playoff spot in the tough Western Conference, the team is looking to for potential trades to improve its roster. The player highly rumored to be shipped soon is shooting guard Kevin Martin.
As per bleacherreport.com, Martin is shooting his career worst field goal percentage at 36% and is only averaging 14.9 points per game. The volume scorer will make $7.3 million in the final year of his contract at the 2016-2017 season.
The potential move would also help the development of prospect Zach Lavine. According to startribune.com, last year's NBA Slam Dunk champion was named as the Timberwolves starting shooting guard for this season.
Interim head coach Sam Mitchell said that this decision is for the organization's future. "It's not necessarily about earning (the spot)," Mitchell said, "it's about where you are as an organization and where you're trying to go."
LaVine said he attributes this new position to the hard work he put in during the offseason. "I feel like I proved myself throughout training camp," LaVine said. "I've had a really good training camp and I'm just out to prove something."
Based on a report by bringmethenews.com, LaVine feels that the label of him as an athletic high flying guard does not cover his whole game. "People put a label on me that I'm just a driver, but coming out of high school I was a good shooter," LaVine said.
With Martin on the trading block, sources say that the Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks are possible trading partners for Martin. These 2 teams are in much need of additional scoring from the perimeter. The Clippers could trade Josh Smith to the Timberwolves while the Knicks could make a package of Derrick Williams and Jose Calderon for the scoring guard.
