If you're wondering why the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie franchise isn't moving at the same speed of other tent poles like "The Avengers" or "The Dark Knight," it's because the creative team on the original project may not have been the right choice.
That is to say, creator E.L. James was not happy with the direction her wildly popular book was going in once it was adapted for the screen.
According to reports, the sequel movie to "Fifty Shades of Grey" will be getting a new director and writer team after difficulties between creator E.L. James and the previous creative team. Alongside the new creative team, several "Five Shades Darker" spoilers about the tone of the film have been revealed.
Based on interviews, it appears that the main trouble was between E.L. James and "Fifty Shades of Grey" director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
"We battled all the way through. She'd say the same. There were tough times and revelatory times. There were sparring contests. It was definitely not an easy," said Taylor-Johnson (via Movie Pilot).
Sam Taylor-Johnson has been replaced by director James Foley, who is known for his work on films like "Perfect Stranger" and "Glengarry Glen Ross." Foley will be working from a new screenwriting team of E.L. James (as she wrote the original novel) and her husband Niall Leonard.
As for "Fifty Shades Darker" spoilers, according to Movie Pilot, there is a huge tone change planned for the new movie. In an interview with Elle magazine, franchise star Dakota Johnson explained that she felt that the movie needed more laughs to make the character of Anastasia more relatable.
"If you can't laugh during a movie like that, you're fuc***. Literally. You need to have something that everyone can relate to," said Johnson.
Though there's no official release date other than sometime in 2017, it looks like the "Fifty Shades Darker" movie will be a significant departure from the style of the first movie.
