'Dimension W' Anime Episode 3 Review: Kyoma Hates Coils

Episode 3

The third episode of "Dimension W" is a breather after two episodes of seemingly non-stop action. There's an obvious theme about the difference between humans and robots (manifested with Mira and her incident with the children). But there is also the continued development of the mystery behind the main source of energy in the new world - Dimension W.

After two episodes of knowing Kyoma's dislike for anything coil related, there's definitely interest in the danger of drawing from the unknown. But otherwise, the episode is a breather of sorts, looking mostly at Mira's relationship with human children. Unfortunately for Mira, it doesn't go well - implying that there will seemingly always be a disconnect between Mira and Kyoma.

"Dimension W" has been focused on plot development, so the sudden swtich to character is jarring. However, the theme of what it means to be human (when comparing humans to robots and adults to children) is still an important and eloquently explored one.

But again, the question is posed and unanswered: Why does Kyoma hate coils?

Posing questions is an important part of certain genres of anime, particularly mystery or thriller types. When you breach the level of borderline philosophical (i.e. "Death Parade"), questions need potential answers and unfortunately at the moment, "Dimension W" is not interested in answers.

But at this point in the series, it is not such a bad thing to return to merely questions.

Overall, "Dimension W" episode three is slower paced episode that is focused mostly on character development, with a sprinkling of plot movement involving Kyoma's investigations of Mira's origins. Though not much happens, there's still the lingering mystery of what Dimension W has become to the society and the dangers that come with it.

Ultimately, episode three is enough to pass the time, though not as strong as episode one and two.
