'Sewol Ferry' Movie Halted: Production Beset with Controversies and Negative Comments from Citizens

"Sewol Ferry" is reportedly a project that envisions to recreate the tragic event of the Sewol Ferry accident into a film. However, in the midst of controversial issues, Keedari Funding apparently has halted the project in Mar. 24. The movie was originally scheduled for release in Apr. 2018, four years after South Korea's worst maritime disasters.

According to Allkpop, the movie had been beset with a considerable amount of controversies. One of which is that many believed it was improper to be made a movie since families are still in mourning. It was an enormous tragedy such that it should not be made into a movie for any reason, is what others say.

The Sewol ferry was reportedly carrying 476 people when it sank. Accordingly, more than 300 died, most of them school students. The captain of the South Korean ferry was sentenced to 36 years in prison after he was found guilty of gross negligence. Fifteen crew members allegedly were on trial over the sinking.

Three years after they watched in horror as the Sewol Ferry carrying their children sank, CNN said that the parents of the victims watched the vessel return to the surface last Thursday. The ferry sank on April 16, 2014, and nine bodies are still missing. Engineers lifted the 140-meter vessel several feet out of the water.

The priority accordingly is to find the missing bodies and do the least damage to the ship. In so manner, the truth and the reason it sank could be found. Many of the victims' families wait for answers has been very agonizing. Family groups, including opposition politicians, have long insisted for the Sewol's recovery and a full investigation into its sinking.

The incident was a big blow to the presidency of Park Geun-hye, who appeared to be absent during the disaster. The President apparently only addressed the nation seven hours after the ferry began taking on water. However, the president's impeachment this month for abuse of power was accordingly a bittersweet moment for many Sewol victims' families.
