Former YG Trainee Reveals Harsh Realities of K-Pop Stardom — 'There’s a difference in..'

In an interview with Taiwan's ET Today on February 14, Guno, a former trainee under YG Entertainment, revealed shocking details about the rigorous and often inhumane nature of South Korea's idol trainee system.

Guno, now a member of the J-Pop group BUGVEL, didn't mince words when describing his experiences within the industry.

Stricter Standards: K-Pop vs. J-Pop Training Systems

Guno drew a sharp contrast between the training systems of K-Pop and J-Pop, highlighting the intense rigidity and harshness prevalent in the former.

There's a difference in the way Korea and Japan train idols. Korea is too strict. Oftentimes, it is inhumane. One day, I wanted to buy a Coke at the convenience store, so I tried to sneak out by pretending to pick up trash with another trainee, but we ended up getting caught the next day and were punished.

- Guno

He lamented the excessively strict protocols enforced by K-Pop agencies, branding them as "inhumane."

Recounting a personal anecdote, Guno revealed an incident where he attempted to sneak out to buy a soft drink from a convenience store, only to face severe repercussions upon being caught.Such instances, he emphasized, were emblematic of the unforgiving environment pervasive in the K-Pop training culture.

Guno's Quest for Artistic Fulfillment

Despite the challenges he faced, Guno remains resolute in his pursuit of artistic excellence. Reflecting on his journey since debuting in 2022, he expressed his dissatisfaction with his current career status, asserting that complacency has no place in the realm of artistry.

I am not satisfied (with my career), the minute I am satisfied, I should no longer be an artist. Because I promote in Japan, it is difficult to connect with my Taiwanese fans, but thank you for your support.

- Guno

He underscored the importance of constant self-improvement and growth, a sentiment emblematic of his unwavering dedication to his craft.

Gratitude to Fans amidst Struggles

Amidst the trials and tribulations of his career, Guno expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans, particularly those from Taiwan.

Despite the geographical challenges posed by his activities in Japan, he remains deeply appreciative of the unwavering support he receives from his Taiwanese fanbase.

His acknowledgment serves as a testament to the profound impact of fan encouragement in sustaining artists through their darkest moments.

A Journey Through Reality TV Stardom

Guno's journey in the entertainment industry has been marked by notable appearances on reality television.

From his stint as a contestant on YG Entertainment's Treasure survival contest to his participation in tvN's Produce X 101, he has navigated the tumultuous waters of reality TV stardom with resilience and determination.
