Former ‘Girls Planet 999’ Contestant Reveals How Mnet Isolated Them From ‘Real World’

A former "Girls Planet 999" contestant revealed the lengths Mnet went to isolate the girls from the real world.

Recently, former "Girls Planet 999" contestant Tammy Wu sat down with Graze Grace to talk about her experience competing on the survival show. During her time on the show, Tammy Wu was one of the C-Group (Chinese) trainees who had hoped to make their debut with Kep1er.

During the interview, she revealed that every single contestant was cut off from the outside world. They were forced to surrender their phones to to the staff members and since they filmed during the pandemic, they were unable to leave the training area.

On top of that, they were only given the opportunity to listen to music when they were preparing for a challenge. They would be given an iPad with one audio file of the song they were performing, and the only video in the gallery would be of the choreography.

She stated, "I know in some shows they say they were able to leave the filming and only come back on filming days but because we were also in the middle of the pandemic we were not able to go anywhere. We just had an iPad with one audio file of whatever we were performing and one video in the gallery. We had one MP3 too where we could listen to music but it would be only be whatever you were performing."

Tammy Wu then revealed that in the half-year they took to film the show, the contestants were only given one month as a break to leave the premises and live their normal lives. When they returned, they were forced to surrender their phones again.

During filming, they were not allowed to listen to music that wasn't part of the show, and had no access to any social media. Tammy stated that this was probably done to stop an accidental leak from happening, as well as to make sure the girls didn't know what was happening in advance.

During her time on the show, Tammy Wu competed as an independent trainee. She was eliminated in episode eight at rank C-17. She is currently a student at New York University (NYU), where she majors in music.
