Yang Irae Confirms Cancellation of Girls on Fire Debut: 'It's Not Happening, I'm Sorry' News1

JTBC's Girls on Fire, which aired from April to June, rose as one of the hottest survival audition shows of 2024. It followed the journey of 50 contestants ages 19 to 30, who competed to earn the opportunity of debuting in a five-member female vocal group.

In the finale episode, the winners were promised a prize of about $138,000 (₩200 million), in addition to an album release, a national tour concert, and a global showcase.

In July, the Top 10, along with the debut lineup — which consists of Hwang Seyoung, Kang Yunjeong, Lee Nayoung, Lee Sooyoung, and Yang Irae — initially announced its tour dates and location, but fans were left in the dark when it didn't push through without a notice.

This immediately sparked concerns from their fans, prompting discussions about whether they would still debut, regardless of the team not having a group name yet or any active official social media platforms and promotional activities.

After six months, Yang Irae finally broke her silence and delivered the sad news.

"'What happened to the girls?' 'When is the debut?' 'Where are you?' 'Are you okay?' So today, I wanted to share the news with you," said Yang Irae. "Unfortunately, the Girls on Fire group that we all hoped for, is not happening. I'm sorry."

Following this confirmation, fans sent cheering messages for the members on X. They blamed JTBC for its poor management of the supposed quintet.

"I'm not surprised but given that the show was marketed as an opportunity for women who felt like they didn't fit traditional idol standards this makes me sad," wrote user @/catgrljiwoo.

"What a waste of talent. At least the girls are free. They deserve way better than this," said another user @/Nugu_Verse.

However, Yang Irae attested that it was not the end of her dream of becoming an idol.

"But don't worry, because I will keep up with my dream. I've been working hard and writing my own music and I hope you'll continue to support me," said Irae.
