Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Update Features Restricted Profiles To Protect Children And Improved Battery Usage; Available For Google Nexus Devices

A new Android operating system update, called version 4.3 of "Jelly Bean," is being rolled out by Google. Google unveiled the Android operating system at an event on Wednesday in San Francisco, and though it doesn't feature any huge changes, the update is noteworthy.

Perhaps one of the most useful features is the multi-user settings with Restricted Profiles, which will allow users to protect children in the family by restricting app usage and content consumption on an Android device. IGN reports that this is a big addition for parents, who may be worried that their kids will accidentally purchase thousands of dollars' worth of apps or in-app content.

Version 4.3 of "Jelly Bean" comes nine months after Google introduced Android 4.2. The new update will be available with Nexus range of devices first, including the original Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 tablet and will ship with the new Nexus 7, NDTV Gadgets reports.

Android 4.3 also features OpenGL ES 3.0, which is a great update for users that like to play games. IGN reports demo footage shown by Google demonstrated deeper shadows on the faces of characters.

Google also had added Bluetooth Smart to version 4.3, also known as Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, which allows devices to remain connected to a phone or tablet in a very-low-power state for better standby battery usage, ITProPortal.com reports.

Android 4.3 has updated older features to make them more efficient but meanwhile protecting battery life. Location-tracking features will not drain as much battery life, and Wi-Fi works differently to ensure this. According to ITProPortal.com, even if you have Wi-Fi off, the device will still scan for local networks to help with location acquisition. This may sound like a waste of battery, but is actually more efficient when apps request for location data.
