New 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Comic Series: Will 'The Rift' Bridge The Gap To Legend Of Korra?

During the San Diego Comic-Con, the creators of "The Legend of Korra" got to meet the comic writer of their other series "Avatar: The Last Airbender," and through it all, a new comic series was announced titled "The Rift."

"I feel really lucky to be working with them," says comic writer Gene Yang of working with Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino.

"They're world class storytellers and getting up close to get some insight into their process has been great to me."

According to ComicBookResources, "The Rift" is a three-part comic series focusing on Aang and the building of Republic City, a locale that's become iconic thanks to "The Legend of Korra."

"I think I've grown in admiration for those writers. It's amazing what they were able to do. I have to rewatch the episodes that have to do the issues I'm currently working on. Just the other day, I rewatched 'Avatar Day' episode, and it's amazing! The writer John O'Bryan -- the connections he made between the parts of the show were so deep, and it was all in 22 minutes. Shockingly good!"

But will the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" comic series bridge the gap to the narrative in "The Legend of Korra?"

"They tell me bits and pieces about 'The Legend of Korra,' and I try to throw in references to the bits they tell me, but I don't think there will ever be that direct of a connection. 'Korra' is its own thing."

However, the comic series of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" will continue to showcase time after the animated series, despite it not being directly connected to "The Legend of Korra."

"I think it will just continue. What Mike and Bryan wanted to do with the comic was show that the characters still had a life after that last episode, and we're going to keep going on that idea."

Part 1 of "The Rift" will be available March 5, 2014.
