"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 has a lot of surprises in store for fans. Stefan and Elena's doppelgangers are going to shake up Mystic Falls, according to spoilers for season 5.

Katherine Pierce, the manipulative vampire who once tore the Salvatore brothers apart in an epic love triangle, has often surprised fans with her deceptive ways. Executive producer Caroline Dries dished to Entertainment Weekly the new role Katherine will have in season five.

"Katherine is actually going to be one of the main people this season - one of the main characters," Dries said. "So she's going to be intertwined in their lives - not that they want her there. But she's actually going to need them more than they need her."

We suspect Katherine isn't going to be too pleased when she finds out that Elena, her doppelganger, force-fed her the cure in the season four finale, turning her into a human again, Wet Paint reports. Katherine will need help figuring out how to be a human after 500 years of a wild vampire life.

What about the other doppelganger that was revealed in the season finale? Viewers learned Stefan is actually the evil villain Silas' doppelganger. Silas did a classic switcheroo and trapped Stefan in a locker before throwing him into the lake.

Dries revealed that the cast of characters don't realize that Stefan is actually Silas. So poor Stefan has "been drowning, dying and coming back to life," at the bottom of the lake all summer, Dries said. His friends think that Stefan has gone off the deep end after Elena chose to be with Damon, and are staying far away from him as he wreaks havoc on Mystic Falls. Too bad it's not Stefan at all.
