Why An Eighth Grade Exam From 1912 Is Causing Some To Wonder If School Has Gotten Too Easy

A 1912 eighth grade exam is going viral. The test, which was given to eighth graders in Bullitt County Schools (Kentucky) in 1912, is leading to questions about education. The 1912 eighth grade exam stumps many adults. The exam is below (scroll down).

Of course, times have changed, but the 1912 eighth grade exam contains questions that many American adults don't know-and perhaps should.

Historically, the 1912 eighth grade exam was taken by children to receive scholarships to go to high schools. During this period, high schools were sometimes another county away, and thus, rural farm kids could rarely afford to attend.

Still, the 1912 eighth grade exam has raised serious questions about public school curriculum and the ways education has changed. In particular, national geography, world geography, and history were covered much more extensively on the 1912 eighth grade test.

That said, others have pointed to the fact that several skills that simply didn't exist in 1912 are taught, particularly computers. After all, there are now many more jobs in social media and IT-and fewer farming and industrial jobs.

Of course, the answers to some questions on the 1912 eighth grade exam  will also be different-but it also shows how education has changed. Rote memorization has decreased and focus on analysis has increased.

Still, the tendency to Google every question on the 1912 eighth grade exam doesn't speak highly to modern education...much less information retention or attention spans.
