Oscar Pistorius Case Update: Double-Amputee Athlete To Be Indicted For Murder Of Reeva Steenkamp, Evidence Will Convict Blade Runner Experts Say

Oscar Pistorius’ case gets the spotlight once again Monday as the double-amputee athlete returns to court. The Olympian and Paralympian known as “Blade Runner,” will be indicted for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Statement from South Africa’s national police said that detectives, forensic experts, ballistic experts, psychologists and technology experts all worked on the case and are confident that they have the evidence to convict Pistorius.

“The South African Police Service is hopeful that justice will prevail,” the statement said.

In a report by the AP, it said that the most telling evidence maybe in records on cellphones found at Pistorius’ home and thorough examination of the toilet cubicle door through which the athlete shot four bullets, hitting Steenkamp three times and killing her. The bullet’s angle or trajectory could show that Pistorius was standing on his stumps when he shot, as he says, or if he was on his prosthetics, as the prosecution maintains – a marked difference of two accounts.

The 26-year-old Oscar Pistorius will be indicted on the main charge of premeditated murder on Monday at Pretoria’s Magistrate Court, says the prosecutors on the case. It’s a confirmation that they will maintain the charge initially laid against Pistorius for Steenkamp’s death last February.

The athlete has repeatedly denied that he committed murder, claiming that it was an accident and he fired the shots out of self-defense.

The AP said that the blockbuster trial is expected to start in early 2014 but the exact date will likely be set on Monday, prosecutors noted. Trial for Oscar Pistorius could probably be in February or March, a year since Reeva Steenkamp was killed.

Indictment papers served on Pistorius by the state mean that the case will be sent to the High Court in the South African capital Pretoria and a judge will preside over the trial and ultimately pronounce the world-famous athlete innocent or guilty, reported AP. South Africa does not have trial by jury, unlike in the United States.

The mandatory sentence for someone convicted of murder is life with a minimum of 25 years in prison, which implies that if the athlete is found guilty on the charge, he will be more than 50-years-old once he is freed. South Africa does not have death penalty as capital punishment.

The AP indicated that indictment papers will include a list of two witnesses to be called by the prosecution during trial, and detail some of the evidence police investigators have collected in the six months since Pistorius fatally shot Reeva Steenkamp in a bathroom in his home on Valentine’s Day 2013.

Last week, South African police announced that they had completed the six-month investigation into Steenkamp’s killing at Pistorius’ residence at the pre-dawn hours of February 14. They are “convinced the accused has a charge to answer to.” The Associated Press said that this effectively means that the police conclusion in gathering evidence show that the prosecution is ready to go to trial.
