Tylenol Warnings: Label On Extra Strength Cap Will Warn Of Acetaminophen Overdose, ‘Most Common Poisonings Worldwide’

Bottles of Extra Strength Tylenol will have a label on the cap with warnings to deter acetaminophen overdose.

The Extra Strength Tylenol warning on the cap will read: "Contains acetaminophen. Always read the label."

CNN reports that the bright red lettering on the warning label is an effort by Tylenol's parent company, Johnson & Johnson, to reduce the number of accidental acetaminophen overdoses that occur each year.

"Acetaminophen overdose is one of the most common poisonings worldwide," according to the National Institutes of Health, CNN reports.

The label will appear on Tylenol bottles in October.

According to NBC News, there is a growing number of lawsuits and pressure from the U.S. federal government that could have widespread ramifications for a medicine taken by millions of people every day. The company faces more than 85 personal injury lawsuits in federal court that blame Tylenol for liver injuries and deaths.

The new cap is also designed to grab the attention of people who don't read warnings, which appear in the fine print on the product's label, according to company executives, NBC News reports.

"We're always looking for ways to better communicate information to patients and consumers," says Dr. Edwin Kuffner, vice president of McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the Johnson & Johnson unit that makes Tylenol.

Overdoses from acetaminophen send 55,000 to 80,000 people to the emergency room in the U.S. each year and kill at least 500, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, NBC News reports.

An overdose of Extra Strength Tylenol can cause severe liver damage, according to CNN. The Food and Drug Administration sets the maximum limit for adults at 4,000 milligrams per day. One gel tablet of Extra Strength Tylenol contains 500 mg.
