Oscar Pistorius Trial Update: South African Minister For Women Wants Toughest Sentence For Blade Runner, Accused Athlete Must ‘Finally Face Justice’

Oscar Pistorius’ trial will begin on March 2014 where a South African court will finally decide if he is guilty or innocent of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Even before the sensational case begins, the double-amputee athlete is already finding a detractor in Lulu Xingwana, South Africa’s Minister for Women, Children and People.

“We are saying to the courts: we want to see the toughest sentences and we also want to make sure that the accused does not run away, that they finally face justice,” Xingwana said Monday according to NDTV.

The double-amputee athlete briefly appeared in court Monday, which coincided with Reeva Steenkamp’s 30th birthday. He is being accused of allegedly murdering Reeva by shooting her four times while behind a bathroom door. He was indicted Monday for the murder charge.

South Africa’s minister for women was at the court to represent Steenkamp’s family.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, 107 witnesses have been named to assist with the trial. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel has said that the Olympian’s case has been transferred to the High Court in Pretoria.

The athlete called Blade Runner has been consistently claiming that it was an accident and that he mistook Reeva for a burglar. He acted out of self-defense.

Police, however, does not support his account and argued that the case is premeditated murder.

In addition to the murder charge, Pistorius is also facing two new charges – the first charge related to him firing his gun out of the sunroof of a friend’s car while driving home from a holiday, and the second charge is allegedly related to the athlete accidentally firing his friend’s gun in a Johannesburg restaurant.

Oscar Pistorius is currently out on a 1-million-rand or around $100,000 bail.

The South African Olympian and Paralympian who gained global fame during the 2012 London Olympics is the first double-amputee athlete to run in the able-bodied event. He reached the 400 meters semifinals at the latest Summer Olympics.
