Valerie Harper Terminal Brain Cancer Update: On The Way To Remission; Doctor Says 'Life Is About Buying Time'

Valerie Harper's terminal brain cancer might finally come to an end, Valerie told "Today" show on Thursday, adding that she may have bought herself some extra time to enjoy her life.

After battling against leptomeningeal carcinomatoses for many months now, Valerie Harper shared that her prayers may have already been answered after tests showed that she is healing fast.

"I'd say that we're getting pretty close to a remission," Valerie Harper's doctor Dr. Jeremy Rudnick told NBC's Today Show. "It defies the odds."

However, despite the positive feedback of her body to chemotherapy, Rudnick still cautioned the actress on the many certainties and uncertainties of brain cancer. "The problem is that at anytime this can change." The cancer can "develop resistance to the therapy" and it's "not a matter of if . . . it's a matter of when," he said.

NBC News correspondent Meredith Vieira asked Harper's doctor, "So is it about buying time in the hopes that something better comes?"

To which Rudnick answered, "Life is about buying time."

Valerie was diagnosed with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis in early January but only revealed it publicly 2 months after. Her rare condition is characterized by the metastasis of cancer cells to the meninges or the fluid-filled barrier of the brain.

Us magazine reported that Valerie's doctors told her before that she only had a minimum of three months and a maximum of six to live. However, after receiving on-going chemotherapy, and even resorting to homeopathic remedies such as acupuncture and drinking Chinese tea, she may have really bought an extra time to live.

Tony Cacciotti, Valerie Harper's husband, expressed a sigh of relief and gratitude after hearing the news. He also showed his excitement now that they can spend more time together.

"Going from having three months to live, or less; we're into our sixth month, and now there's even hope beyond right now we're looking at . . . I never planned on this," Tony said. "This is overwhelming."

Additionally, Valerie told Vieira, "We're all going to die, but because I have a finite time -- or have been told so by my doctors -- I just want to live every moment to the fullest."

Because of her more stable condition, Valerie may now get back to work, and according to TMZ she is now preparing to battle it out on the upcoming 17th season of 'Dancing with The Stars.'
