New Orleans Baby Shot: One-Year-Old Shot On Street, Babysitter In Critical Condition

A New Orleans baby shot this week has died.

The New Orleans baby was shot and killed and her baby-sitter was wounded this week in a crime-riddled area of New Orleans.

The toddler and babysitter were walking around 8:30 PM when gunshots rang out. Two men were seen running in the area, police spokesman Frank Robertson said.

The babysitter, 18, is in stable condition in the hospital in New Orleans. She was shot in her back and was not identified by name. Her grandparents said recently that they saw her in the hospital early in the morning and that she was alert; they held her hand.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office identified the 13-month-old girl as Londyn Samuels.

Superintendent Ronal Serpas said of the two unknown suspects believed to be responsible: "These men took a baby's life tonight, and wounded a young woman. They don't deserve to walk freely among the people of New Orleans. They must answer for what they've done.

"When these men opened fire, it was still early, and people were still out and about in the neighborhood. We need people to come forward, and tell us what they know."

The babysitter is a friend of the dead baby's father who would sometimes watch the toddler.

New Orleans Police said they have no motive in the case and are not sure if the baby sitter and child were the intended targets.
