Dave Chapelle Walks Off Stage; Patton Oswalt Defends Him: Hecklers, "You're The Problem"

Dave Chapelle walked off the stage in a "meltdown", and now Patton Oswalt said he had good reasons to do so.

Patton Oswalt defended Dave Chapelle for walking off the stage during his set at the Comcast Theater in Hartford, Connecticut because of heckling.

Oswalt, 44, said the "Chapelle Show" star asked the crowd to calm down so that he could tell his jokes...and the audience kept yelling at him.

The audience was asking Dave Chapelle to perform routines from the show, rather than letting him just do his thing.

Chapelle opened the set with some hilarious Paula Deen jokes, but audience members started calling out references to his past work.  They didn't want to hear his new jokes...just rehash the past.

Chappelle waited for the crowd to calm down, and they...didn't. At all. Finally, he said, "I've been up here a while now and I thought it was me but now I 'm sure it's you. There is definitely something wrong with you."

Dave Chapelle then sat on the stage with his cigarettes and some water, and, oddly enough, read an excerpt from an audience member's book. He kept being booed, and Chapelle finally said, You are booing yourself. I want you to go home and look in the mirror and say 'boo,' that's how I feel about you." He then walked off the stage.

Oswalt tweeted in Chapelle's defense, saying the incident was the crowd's fault.

Oswalt said on Twitter, "Chappelle's touring now, trying to do his usual, brilliant stuff, and the crowds are screaming, "I'm Rick James, bitch!" Idiots.

He followed up with,

Dear Dave Chappelle's fans: He's one of the best comedians working, & you're not letting him do what he loves. Stop being assholes.

Preach, brother.

Oswalt also told audience members who Tweeted at him, claiming Chapelle was "hardly heckled", that they were "part of the problem.

Matthew O'Brien Tweeted at Patton Oswalt,

I was there, people were hardly heckling him. Just yelling that they loved him and quoting older material

Oswalt fired back,

‪@mattobrien37 In that Tweet, you just perfectly illustrated why people like you are the problem.

During other shows on the tour, audience members reportedly have been supportive and respectful...so people in Hartford may have missed out due to their rudeness and heckling.

What do you think of Chapelle walking off the stage? Was it justified? Sound off in the comments below!
