Boxing Champion Tommy Morrison Dies: 44, HIV Could Play A Role On Man Who Defeated George Foreman For The Title, Though His Wife Denies It

Boxing champion Tommy Morrison dies at 44-years-old in a hospital Sunday night in Omaha, Nebraska.

Tommy Morrison was the heavyweight boxing champion as the WBO champ in 1993 after he defeated the legendary George Foreman. He dies from reasons yet known.

It was in 1996 when Tommy Morrison was scheduled to fight Arthur Weathers, until he tested for HIV. It ended the boxing champions' career and 17 years later, he dies from what his wife, Trisha, is still unsure of.

In 2011, she said Guillain-Barre Syndrome was what her husband had, not HIV. It was 10 years after the HIV test that he tried to make a comeback when he denied that he had the disease.

Morrison's longtime promoter, Tony Holden, said Morrison died at 11:50 p.m. with his wife, Trisha, beside him, according to ESPN.

"I don't know what the official cause of death at the hospital will be," he told ESPN. "You prepare for things like this, and still you feel like you got hit by a truck when you hear the news."

He lost only three out of a total of 52 professional fights. Morrison's nickname, "The Duke," is based on being a grandnephew of Hollywood star John Wayne.

His acting career was as a co-star with Sylvester Stallone in the 1990 boxing movie "Rocky V." He played Tommy Gunn in the film, which was as a talented, young boxer.
