`Fifty Shades of Grey’ Casting Is Painful for Fans; Start Petition to Demand New Leads

“50 shades of Grey” casting was only announced two days ago and it’s already getting blowback. The producers of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie cast Dakota Johnson, the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, in the role of Anastasia Steele. Charlie Hunnam from “Sons of Anarchy” will wield the whip as Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

With “Fifty Shades of Grey” casting in Place, Universal and Focus were going to start turning up the marketing heat. Fans of E.L. James’ erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” are balking at the reports that Charlie Hunnam will star opposite Dakota Johnson in the upcoming film.

Fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey” have been anticipating and speculating who will play the kinky billionaire Christian Grey and his young lover Anastasia Steele in the upcoming movie adaptation since plans were announced that the book will be making its way to screen. They are not happy about the Labor Day casting announcement.

E.L. James, the author of “Fifty Shades of Grey” announced on Twitter that Charlie Hunman of “Sons of Anarchy” and Dakota Johnson from “Ben and Kate” were cast as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steel on Labor Day, ending months of speculations. But “Fifty Shades of Grey” loyalists had already made up their minds. They were set to see Matt Bomer from “White Collar” as Christian Grey and and Alexis Bledel of “Gilmore Girls” fame to play Anastasia Steele.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” fans started a petition on Change.org to protest of the new casting decisions. The petition has already received more than 7,000 signatures.

The petition reads “All readers believe matt is christian (sic). It would be a dream to see him in the movie.”

Matt Bomer was the fan’s favorite choice to play Christian Grey, barely edging out Henry Cavil, who played the “Man of Steel” and Ian Somerholder of “Vampire Diaries.”

One commenter wrote “Matt Bomer is perfect to play this role… He’s the only Christian Grey. He is a great actor and he can fit the character perfectly… No Bomer No Movie.”

The casting that is in place has its own fans.

Dana Brunetti, a “Fifty Shades of Grey” co-producer took to Twitter to defend the choices, “There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”

This isn’t the first time fans of a movie have petitioned to change the lead actors. Change.org recently saw Batman fans starting a petition demanding that Warner Bros., recast the role of Batman in the upcoming “Batman vs. Superman” movie after it was announced that Ben Affleck would play the caped crusader. That “Batman vs. Superman” petition got over 90,000 signatures.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is set to premiere in 2014.
