American Horror Story Coven Producer To Helm Female Thriller Drama: Ryan Murphy Talks Returning Popularity Of Horror Genre

"American Horror Story: Coven" is filming its anticipated season 3 in New Orleans, but executive producer Jessica Sharzer will continue the horror and thriller trend with "No Way Back."

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that ABC has greenlit a pilot for the drama, based on the best-selling novel by Andrew Gross. "No Way Back" focuses on two women who join forces on a dangerous journey to discover the truth.

"American Horror Story" co-executive producer Jessica Sharzer will write and executive produce the drama.

And as viewers have seen with shows like "Hemlock Grove," "The Walking Dead," and now "American Horror Story: Coven," the resurgence of the horror and thriller genre is slowly saturating the TV medium.

During a recent talk on the Sundance Channel's "The Writer's Room," "American Horror Story: Coven" creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk comment on the returning popularity.

"The last big two explosions of horror, at least in movies, and also in musicals, were times of economic and social unrest," comment "American Horror Story" co-creator Ryan Murphy.

"I think if you look at the world in the past five years, it makes sense to me why that genre is sort of exploding on television now. Because it reflects the time that we're in, in many ways."

"I think you need Boogeymen to help with your [anxiety]," says Brad Falchuk.

"'Is the terrorist going to attack?' 'Am I gonna lose my job?' 'Is the stock market gonna crash?' So you find a creature to put all that anxiety on and it makes you feel better."
