Positive that no one but Martin Scorsese could successfully execute "Wolf On Wall Street," Leonardo DiCaprio held out on the movie until the infamous director was in on it.

"The Wolf Of Wall Street" is based on the memoir of Jordan Belfort, the New York financier who spent time behind bars for securities fraud and money laundering.

When DiCaprio picked up the rights to Belfort's story in 2007, he contacted Scorsese with the idea. That led to them getting a deal to make the movie with Warner Bros. studio executives. Unfortunately when the stock market crashed in 2008, the "Goodfellas" creator backed out.

DiCaprio made an attempt to work with other directors on the project, but it just didn't feel right.

DiCaprio told New York magazine, “Marty directing was Jordan’s dream scenario, absolutely. When Marty couldn’t do it the first time, I set it up with a few other directors, but I never felt comfortable pulling the trigger. I was fixated on him (Scorsese). There wasn’t anybody else who could bring the rawness and toughness, the music, and particularly the humor required to convey the excitement of these young punks – these robber barons – taking on the Wall Street system.”

Eventually, the duo got back together and managed to get a new deal with independent production company Red Granite.

DiCaprio has worked with Scorsese in four projects thus far, including "The Departed."
