Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch Release Date, Specs, Review

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch specs and release have been unveiled after an endless series of leaks....but the reviews aren't great.

One early review of the smart watch from The Verge says,

There are a couple of significant downsides that temper my enthusiasm for the new Gear. First and foremost is the speed and intuitiveness of the user interface - or rather, the lack thereof. There's a tangible lag to anything you do with the Gear, while the swipe gestures are hard to figure out and do different things depending on where you are in the menus. Additionally, the speaker built into the buckle is too quiet and makes the old sci-fi action of conducting a phone call via your watch a possibility only in quiet areas; it also doesn't play back any music, it just controls output on your connected device. Most of all, however, I find it hard to justify spending the $299 asking price on an accessory like the Galaxy Gear. It's too dependent on its parent device for functionality - which will cost you a fair amount too - and, like all other smartwatches, fails to truly live up to the "smart" part of its name.

Despite the bad review, other say it will live up to the hype. Here are some other specs for the  Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch, which will be about the size of a normal watch.  In a nutshell, the Android device will function much like a phone...without needing to touch a phone.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will sport a 63-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 1.9-megapixel 'Memographer' camera, and Bluetooth.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will have voice control to carry out functions like operating apps, turning music on, and even making or receiving calls and sending messages.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be released Sept 25 and come in a virtual rainbow of colors: Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green. The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be priced at $299.

In addition, Samsung has teamed up with Glympse and Path so that users can share photos and leave messages or post their location for friends and family using Path in seconds.

When the Galaxy Gear launches, it will only work with the Note 3 and Note 10.1, disappointing many fans. Later in the year, it will be compatible with the Galaxy S4 after it gets a software update to Android 4.3.

There will be about 70 apps at launch of the Galaxy Gear. Some include MyFitnessPal, Samsung-specific apps, and Highlight, which allows users to connect with other users close by. Another app fans are excited is Handshake Memory.
