GTA V Online: Rockstar Confirms Microtransactions, Allows Spending Real Cash To Get Equips 'A Little Quicker'

Yesterday, we reported about a leaked file that allows players to purchase in-game items in the online version of GTA V. In announcement Rockstar made several hours later, it confirmed that there would be optional microtransactions for players to purchase their gear.

However, the developer stressed that while these in-game purchases would allow players to get stronger weapons, faster vehicles, and flashier clothes, they can still get them through earned points by finishing missions.

In addition, even if a player purchases a particular weapon online, he wouldn't still be able to use it unless he unlocks it (which most probably can also be done by purchasing credits). Here is an excerpt from the post on Rockstar's website:

"The game and its economy have been designed and balanced for the vast majority of players who will not buy extra cash. There is no in-game paywall and nothing that should disrupt the balance of the game. You don't have to spend real money to attain the cars, guns, clothes, flash and style of a high-roller in Los Santos, but can if you wish to get them a little quicker. The economy is balanced differently from the single player economy, and cash earned in one cannot be taken over to the other. Most players will earn cash much faster Online than in Story Mode."

While this 'disclaimer' does not sound too bad for GTA V players, we still don't know how the feature would translate in game, and how it can affect the balance in the game's multiplayer mode.

Here are the card denominations for microtransactions:

According to the announcement, each card can be purchased with a particular amount:

* $100,000 Red Shark Cash Card - £1.99 (about $3.20)
* $200,000 Tiger Shark Cash Card - £3.49 (about $5.60)
* $500,000 Bull Shark Cash Card - £6.99 (about $11.20)
* $1,250,000 Great White Shark Cash Card - £13.49 (about $21.70)

The announcement also confirmed that GTA V Online will only support up to 16 players in a single game event. There are a lot of possible 'heists' and missions which players can get their hands into. Players can also customize their own characters so they don't look like any other player.

GTA V Online will launch on October 1 and will be available to anyone who has purchased the game. Rockstar also warns that players may experience server glitches and game bugs during the first few days after launch.
