Miriam Carey Washington D.C. shooting friends and family have trouble comprehending how this 34-year-old dental hygienist could lead police on a high-speed chase with her one-year-old daughter in the car.

According to Miriam Carey's mother, her daughter was suffering from post-partum depression following the birth of her child and her daughter believed her privacy was in question. This all could have possibly led to the Washington D.C. shooting, according to her friends and family.

Two Washington police officers were injured from the chase as Miriam Carey would eventually be shot dead after a standoff with the police. Her one-year daughter was not injured from the D.C. shooting.

Carey's mother, Idella Carey, told ABC News on Thursday night that her daughter began suffering from post-partum depression after giving birth to her daughter, Erica, last August.

"A few months later, she got sick," she said. "She was depressed. ... She was hospitalized."

Idella said her daughter had "no history of violence" and thought she was asking her own one-year-old daughter to the doctors in Connecticut and had no clue why she would be in D.C.

A law enforcement source involved in the investigation said Thursday that the woman's boyfriend had told police last winter that she appeared to be delusional. At her home in Stamford Connecticut, police found one medication to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and another that is an antidepressant, according to the source.

"She was pleasant. She was very happy with her daughter, very proud of her daughter," Erin Jackson, 31, who lived next door to Carey told the Associated Press. "I just never would have anticipated this in a million years."

"We're shocked to know this happened and we feel saddened for her family and all those involved," Dr. Brian Evans, a periodontist in Hamden, Conn., who employed Carey, said.

He also said Carey was fired following her return to the office after giving birth to her child as well as falling down stairs, banging her head.
