Nexus Smartwatch Price, Release Date: Rumored Launch This Month For Google’s Wearable Device, To Be Announced With Android 4.4 KitKat

The much-rumored Nexus smartwatch, which many believe Google will soon be releasing, now has a pegged, but still unconfirmed release date. According to Artem Russakovskii, founder of the site Android Police in his Google Plus account, the new Google device will be launched on October 31 together with the Android 4.4 KitKat.

“Google will announce a Nexus watch, codenamed Gem, likely together with the KitKat announcement. The date I have, which, once again, is about a month old, is also October 31st,” Artem wrote on his Google Plus account.

There was initially no speculations on when Google will release a wearable gadget, particularly since most focus have been given to the Google Glass, which is the first device in the category that Google has launched.

The imminence, however, of the tech giant to release a smartwatch was discovered when the company purchased a wearable tech startup under the radar, one year ago. WIMM Labs created an Android-powered smartwatch in 2011, which it announced. A few months after the announcement, the company signed an “exclusive, confidential relationship” with an unidentified company. According to NASDAQ.com, many thought it was Apple. But a report in August surface, which turned out that Google purchased the company.

According to reports, a good lot of the original WIMM team stayed on after acquisition to keep working with Google and their LinkedIn profiles gave away the change in employers. Google also got to wrap their fingers around the domain smartwatch.com.

The wearable gadget category is heating up thanks to the advent of smartwatches and the AR lens, Google Glass. If in case Google releases its own version of a smartwatch, it will have two wearable devices under its belt – the Google Glass and the smartwatch.

This new market segment has been dubbed by the Guardian as the “war for the wrist,” and many players hope to capitalize on the growing pie. Apple was recently in the news as well for trademarking the word iWatch in Japan and Russia and Samsung has just unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
